Marriage Notes (William Perry Collins)
William and Mary were 2nd cousins. William was the descendent of Cynthia Spears and Christopher Collins. Mary was the descendent of Spencer Spears (Cynthia's brother) and Roseanna Wells.
This couple settled on the Sycamore branch of the Daniel's Creek, on land originally settled and farmed by the Spears family.
William followed his father in vocational pursuits. He was a well known circuit preacher and like his father , considered himself a Campbellitte. He is known to have preached on occasion at the First Christian Church in Ashland, Kentucky, but he was a circuit rider first and foremost. Farming may have beeen a side venture, but it was Vertie(Mary) who kept the farm going and raised the children. Her son, Hansford Winfield Collins, spoke many times of his mother sheering the sheep, carding the wood, spinning and weaving the cloth into needed clothing for her growing children.
It was Vertie who insisted the children get as much education as they could and taught them the necessary chores to keep the farm going. She died in Childbirth on 18 Oct 1909. The baby, a son, died also and was buried in his mother's arms. They rest next to William in the hillside graveyard on Daniel's Creek, across from the old home place. 15
