Notes
General:
Moved to Russell Co., Virgina and later moved his family to Floyd Co., Kentucky sometime before 1810.
The first record of a Speers owning land was an indenture made by Spencer Speers from John Graham on 20 Jun 1816. The Deed was for a 100 acre tract on John's Creek adjoaining the property of Ebenezer Hanna and William Webb. One point of reference was that of William Webb Still House. later deeds referred to that point as Still House Branch. Larry Delong, a lifetime resident of the lower John's Creek area, noted in the summer of 1992 that Still House Branch was the first water course on the right as you travel up John's Creek from the Levisa Fork.
Spencer's second wife, Tabitha, was so badgered by the law in regard to her kids (there were a couple of court heaings) that the decision was to go to Brown County, Ohio. It is suspected that Spencer went to Russell Co. to sell his land, 4 Jun 1817 to Thomas and Robert Speers. He came back to Floyd Co. and at last, tried to take Talithy and the kids to Brown Co, Ohio.
Spencer died sometime during that period of 1816-1820. Brown Co. Historical Society says he died in Clermont Co., Oh. One of his descendents thinks he must have died in Kentucky.
Many of his descendents still live in Ohio.
According to family tradition, Spencer was a tobacco farmer. 15,193
Marriage Notes (Tabitha Chaffin)
On 18 Aug 1817, The Floyd Co. Court order a "subpoena be issued against Spencer Speers and his wife to appear and shoe cause why their children should not be bound out". On 19 Jan 1818: "Tabitha Speers came into court and laid a charge against Robert Haws to whom her daughter was bound stating said apprentice was being abused." Tabitha appeared again in the court records on 17 Feb 1818 and 15 Jun 1818.
