The Darrow Family
The Rev. Zadock Darrow was born 11 Jun 1768 in Lyme, New London, CT. He married Lucy Lord on 25 Jan 1791 in Lyme, CT. He was the son of the Rev. Zadoc Darrow, a Baptist minister of some prominence in New London co., CT. Sometime between 1807 and 1809, Zadock's family moved to New York state, settling variously in Butternuts, Hartwick, and Norwich, NY. The family then reportedly moved to St. Louis, MO where they lived for three years.

Around 1825, the family moved to Illinois, settling first in Randolph co., IL, where for a year or two Rev. Darrow served a church on the Horse Prairie, located about four miles east of Red Bud. He is listed in the 1825 census of Randolph county.

Zadock is first mentioned in the Minutes of the Rock Springs Baptist Church , located in O'Fallon twp. of St. Clair Co., on 11 July 1829. His children were prominent Baptists, many serving in leadership positions in the Oak Hill Baptist Church. A number of his descendants are buried in the historic Rock Springs and Oak Hill Cemeteries in St. Clair co. A Darrow descendant still farms some of the original Darrow property owned in O'Fallon, St. Clair, IL, although the Darrow surname has died out in St. Clair county.

The Darrow family can be traced back to Sgt. George Darrow, whose name first appears between 1675 and 1680 in New London county, CT and who died in 1704. Clarence S. Darrow, the famed lawyer who represented Scopes against William Jennings Bryan, is also a descendant of this family, being a second cousin twice removed from the Rev. Zadock Darrow.

Because of the early New England connections, Darrow ancestors include the well researched surnames of Allen, Browne, Champney, Hastings, Lee, Lathan, Rogers, Packer, Quarles, Sherman, and Smith, among others.
