This unit was formed to protect the citizens of Wright County and their property against Bushwhackers a nd marauding military units. The State Guard was neither for the North or the S outh. As the war progressed and Missourians were forced to make decisions as to where their loyalties belonged they became a fighting unit for the Confederate States of America. He was a private in the 1st Missouri Regiment, Company G of the Confederate States Army. He fought at the battle of Wilson's Creek near Sp ringfield, Missouri, on August 10, 1861 and was wounded. A mini ball went throu gh him and lodged in his uniform jacket. Several years ago Wilson's granddaught er, Coe Ellis, was in possession of the mini ball. She gave it to Molly Gaithe r Haggard, Wilson's youngest daughter. After a lot of investigation and paperwo rk by members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans organization, a footstone was placed at his gravesite in 1999 in honor of his military service. ?? the Be ndavis Church of Christ. 'In 1882, evangelist Christopher Columbus Haggard had church services in the log cabin home of Wilson Gaither. The farm was located j ust west of Bendavis in extreme eastern Wright county, Missouri. The congregati on met at the Gaither farm until about 1884, when services were moved to the El lis school house in Texas County. The 1897 Disciples of Christ Yearbook listed the Ellis school house as housing a congreation. The congregation assembled at the Ellis School house for twenty-nine years, until 1913. In 1913, the congrega tion moved to the Dunsmore School house in Texas County, and met there until 19 15'.
