General:
This is Margaret Ann Horn Hobbs, the first wife of John Wesley Hobbs. She was born in 1834 to Michael and Susannah (Crum) Horn.Marriage Notes (Daniel K. Fain)
Rosa Mosley said Margaret hid money in the attic under a board during the war;
had to cook in fireplace when no one was around because the Union troops would
come in and take everything. Said Michael (meant Frederick) was in army and
was coming home. He was starved and a woman came out who was selling pies.
She supposedly poisoned him. He got sick and fell over dead, he told about
this. Several men died. Susan told this story to Rosa.
Rosa also stated that Granny Peg was buried in the Jarrell Cemetery and she was
living with Henry Damron when she died. Henry was called Hen Fane and Hen
Damron but Susan, d/o Margaret, said he was a Dameron. Rosa also said that
Eliz. was Susan's baby sister, a whole sister, and Susan took care of her.
Said that Peg Horn Hobbs Fane lay for months before she died. She stayed with
one or the other of her chidlren. When she moved, it took five or six of the
children (gchildren) to move her things. She died on Big Elk and is buried in
Jarrell cem. She had big bed sores all over her. She wanted to stay with
Henry, her favorite son, but he had nothing except what he was given, as he
would not work. Peg died at Henry's, was blind for years. Henry was married
to Pop Crum. Rosa said John bought fabric for Rosa's dresses and Peg would
slip her nickles. John Hobbs used to get a pension and Rosa said he gave money
to his mother, Peg. (I believe Rosa was confused and meant he gave money to his
wife, Peg.) 12,435
